Our Oakland "Democracy for America" Meetup agenda for November should be even more exciting than October's meetup, when nearly 100 progressives came to the Rockridge Library to hear UC Berkeley Prof. George Lakoff speak.

On DFA's usual "first Wednesday of the month" meetup, we have another compelling program with Assemblywoman Loni Hancock, special bonus clips from the Brave New Films documentary "Iraq for Sale" and award-winning journalist Miriam Raftery on the controversy brewing around Blackwater's plans to build a mercenary base on the California border.

Will you attend Wednesday's meetup? So we can order enough pizza, make enough copies, and set up enough seats, please RSVP right now

(1) REPORT FROM ASSEMBLYWOMAN LONI HANCOCK

Assemblywoman Loni Hancock reports to us first about the latest news from Sacramento, from health care to clean money reform.

IMPORTANT: Assemblywoman Hancock needs to leave promptly at 7:45, so please get to the Meetup no later than 7 p.m. to get a good seat.

(2) BLOCKING BLACKWATER IN IRAQ AND CALIFORNIA

First, we'll watch an exclusive bonus clip from "Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers" by Robert Greenwald's Brave New Films. Then, award-winning journalist MIRIAM RAFTERY will talk and answer questions about the controversy surrounding Blackwater's plans to build a mercenary base on the San Diego border as well as give us an update on the wildfires that just ravaged the area.

IMPORTANT: We are flying Miriam up from San Diego and will be asking for donations at the Meetup to cover the cost of her flight. Any donation, no matter the amount, is welcome but there is NO OBLIGATION to donate.

Meanwhile, please remember to:

1) Come between 6:15-6:45 pm if you want to mingle with Meetuppers, be interviewed for "What are Progressive Values?" and enjoy "Dinner and the Daily Show"
2) Bring something to give away as our traditional "raffle" door prize (bring your DVD's and books!)
3) Join us as we drink progressively at "Ben 'n Nicks" late into the night after the Meetup (Miriam will be joining us!)

Looking forward to seeing you and your friends, family and neighbors on Wednesday!

Who attended?

  • 61 attendees
    •  The speakers were interesting, but I did not enjoy the organization of the group. People kept forcing me to interact with them. One women was fairly insistent that I talk about my political views on video to be uploaded to YouTube. They were also forceful in getting everyone to contribute to their letter writing campaign. New comers were signaled out several times. While I am sure the organizers would just say they were trying to make people feel welcome, I felt like I was at an event for Scientologists or Hare Krishnas more than people interested in politics.

Time could have been managed better.
    •  This event had all the elements that have made meet-ups so much fun to attend and so informational -- good presenters, good AV material to support the topics and an action item that got everyone enthusiastic about change.

mentioning bills by number without solid explanation isn't useful.
    •  it was moving and energizing to hear from miriam raferty
    •  PLEASE order more veggie pizza! Please order more pizza, generally, but please order a LOT of veggie pizza. The Omnivores obivousy feel free to take the veggie pizza, if they prefer it. And they obviously prefer it. I arrived in what should have been plenty of time, and nothing was left but pepperoni (I pulled them of and ate the cheese pizza--hey, I'd paid for three pieces and they weren't there. I don't mean to run this into the ground but BUY MORE PIZZA, AND A TON MORE VEGGIE PIZZA! If you're going to hit us up for more money at the end, please warn us. We're not all made of money. We need to know how many pitches will be made per meeting. In the future I may not give at the door, realizing that I may be hit up again. Tonight was a pretty BigTicket item for me, given the fact that there really weren't three pieces of veggie pizza available for me when I paid my $5. But enough of this raving. It was a great MeetUP. Thanks to all of you for your great work. Just order a LOT more Veggie pizza in the future. Maybe ALL veggie. Why not give it a try?
    •  I gave feedback at the event
    •  Topics were extremely important.
    •  I HAD NEVER HEARD HER SPEAK BEFORE AND I WILL DEFINATELY WORK FOR HER CALIFORNIA SENATE CANDIDACY IF SHE IS TERMED OUT OF THE ASSEMBLY.
