You'll get invited to our Meetups as soon as they're scheduled!
We have it in our power to begin the world over again. -- Thomas Paine
Common sense is seeing things as they are; and doing things as they ought to be. -- Harriet Beecher Stowe
This group was founded by folks who were excited by Howard Dean's campaign for the Democratic Presidential nomination. And we have chosen to stay together to organize for the long-haul.
Most of us were fairly apolitical until the Bush Whitehouse started pursuing policies and strategies we could not countenance, the list of which is too long to recount. Dean inspired us to believe that we can make a difference, and has connected us to knowledge and resources and one another.
We believe in Democracy. First and foremost we want to ensure that Democracy works in this country. We need Verifiable Voting. And we are deeply concerned about recent Media trends that filter or shut out citizens's voices in favor of corporate ones.
We believe that power works best when it is widely shared, and we are concerned by the deepening gulf in our nation between those at the top of the power pyramid, and those at the bottom.
We believe in Common Sense:
Justice In a just America, money should not determine the limits of any American?s future, or deny any American the medical advancements that can save and sustain life. Health insurance, prescription drugs and higher education can be accessible and affordable for everyone.
Fairness Our tax burden today falls most heavily on hard work, while wealth is taxed less. We subsidize corporations that are polluting our environment or sending jobs overseas. But we can restore fairness to our tax code, rewarding hard work, ensuring that wealth pays its fair share, and penalizing waste.
Progress Today, technologies exist that can form the foundation of our economy for the next century. We should invest aggressively in them, just as when our nation invested in railroads, rural electrification, and in public highways. We can create a new energy economy, relying on sources that will never run out, including solar power, wind power, ethanol and biomass. Doing so will reduce our dependence on foreign oil and create new jobs for decades to come.
Because Meetup has changed their fee-structure, we have added a way for individuals to donate toward our group's expenses. Beginning in June we will be spending $16.00 a month. ($7.00 for the website, and $9.00 for www.meetup.com) If our active membership donates the recommended $6 per year we will be able to cover those costs, and set a little something aside toward other activities. Sandy will be keeping track of what comes in, and the Steering Committee will get a monthly report.
