For those interested in local "official" Democratic Party events, the blogger Vivian Paige keeps a good list:

Many members have expressed an interest in more "progressive" or "activist" events in the area, rather than Democratic events. As they say, Democratic events work on getting PEOPLE elected, who may or may not support ISSUES that matter to us once elected. And so some people -- many who have worked hard on elections on the past -- would now rather work directly for issues instead.

For those more issue-driven Dems, there is a local Coffeehouse that is NOT related to the Democratic Party, but rather holds events on issues like peace, health care, etc. The GI coffeehouse "Off Base" sponsors many speakers and events related to progressive issues and activism. (You don't need to be a Vet to go there.)

For more information on events visit the Off Base coffeehouse web site at:
myspace.com/gicoffeehouse
You can RSVP to Tom at norfolkoffbase@gmail.com
Off Base is located at 2501 Fawn in Norfolk, behind the Norfolk Farmer's Market (near 26th and Church). Free street parking is available in front of and near the coffeehouse-- just check the parking signs.

Tom Palumbo -- a local peace activist and Iraq War veteran -- started the coffeehouse in the tradition of GI Coffeehouses established during the Vietnam War (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Sharlet_and_Vietnam_GI and scroll to the section on coffee houses for a mention of Vietnam-era activist coffee houses). In addition to helping wth Veterans' advocacy, Tom likes to host speakers and hold political salons to honor the tradition of Thomas Jefferson's salons.

For our September and October Meetups, I want everyone to do one thing on the day(s) and time(s) of your choice -- show up at one of Creigh Deeds' campaign offices and volunteer to help out.

They'll put you to work somehow -- during the day or early evening you might be doing phone calls; if you show up later at night it could be data entry; or this weekend it might be canvassing.

There are different locations listed on the link below, but of course the main office on the Virginia Beach side of the water is the location on the corner of Witchduck and Cleveland (the 5101 Cleveland, suite 302 address):

http://deedsforvirginia.com/contact

For the office in the bank building on Witchduck and Cleveland (just take the Witchduck exit from I-264 and head in the direction of Virginia Beach Boulevard), their office hours are usually 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and then 12-9 p.m. on Sunday. You can call them at their main number (757) 320-4200 for more info.

For those on the Newport News/Hampton side of the water, the Newport News office is the larger office. Or you can use the closest office to your home, whichever is most convenient.

At the Cleveland and Witchduck location, it's a consolidated office, and so you can work on one of the other campaigns if you'd rather put your time toward that. It doesn't have to be for Deeds -- but Deeds is just barely behind right now, and could use the help!

What: Film, Speakers, and Discussion

Film: "MONEY-DRIVEN MEDICINE" Produced by Academy Award winner Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side; Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room) and based on Maggie Mahar's acclaimed book, Money Driven Medicine: The Real Reason Health Care Costs So Much, the film offers a behind-the-scenes look at how our 2.6 trillion dollar a year healthcare system went so terribly wrong and what it will take to fix it. The U.S. spends twice as much per person on healthcare as the average developed nation, fully one-sixth of our GDP - yet our outcomes, especially for chronic diseases, are very often worse. What makes us different? The U.S. is the only industrialized nation that has chosen to turn medicine into a largely unregulated, for-profit business.

Tim McCarthy, LCSW, Director of Family Counseling Center, representing the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy.

Subject: Regularly scheduled Democratic (and progressive) events in the area:

********** SPECIAL NEW EVENTS LISTING! **********

I'm adding two new events to our list that would appeal more to progressives and activists than "mainstream" structured Democratic Party events. They're monthly gatherings at the new "Off Base" coffeehouse. Both of these events are free (of course donations to the coffeehouse are always welcome), and you can RSVP to Tom at norfolkoffbase@gmail.com:

The first Tuesday of each month, Off Base hosts a "Political Pages" social gathering at 7 p.m., with a book discussion starting at 7:30.

Every 4th Friday at 7:30 p.m., a salon for social policy (moderated discussion forum) will be hosted at Off Base. The discussion starts at 8:30 and concludes at 10:30 p.m.

Off Base is located at 2501 Fawn in Norfolk, behind the Norfolk Farmer's Market (near 26th and Church). Free street parking is available in front of and near the coffeehouse-- just check the parking signs. For more information on any of these events or to RSVP, contact Tom Palumbo of the Off Base coffeehouse (or visit its website) at:

********** Regularly scheduled Democratic Party events **********

To follow is a partial list of regularly-scheduled Democratic events in the Hampton Roads area. These events are sponsored by the individual parties as noted -- not by our meetup group. They are provided for our members' interest, to help everyone become more involved in local party meetings. Be involved! Make a difference!

Dates and locations of individual meetings vary, as noted. (The event date on our board is set near the end of the month to allow this information to appear on our event board for the majority of the month. But the date for each meeting is noted in the text describing it.) If you don't see your party's regular event listed, please contact me! Remember to include details like date, time, location, fees, and a URL or contact info.

The Virginia Beach Democratic Committee has a Bi-monthly breakfast each month.

Location: Mom's Kitchen, 3501 Holland Rd, Virginia Beach

Date/time: 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month

Description: The breakfasts usually have a speaker, or political candidates when campaigns are active. They're usually well-attended.

Donation: Not yet known, as breakfast has just been moved starting in December. Previously the donation at the door was $8.00, but that covered the cost of food, and now members will be ordering their own food. I haven't been notified as to whether there's an additional fee, but as always any fee for this breakfast is payable to the Virginia Beach Democratic Committee to cover their costs, and is NOT a meetup fee.
