The November elections are over! Barack Obama is America's next president! Now it's time to veg out for the next four years in front of the TV, right? Er, no. If we the people are to be the change America needs, change won't come if Americans do nothing. Fortunately, December's Meetup offers ideas on where to start.
First, David Latterman of Fall Line Analytics presents his popular analysis of California voting patterns in the November 2008 election. What myths have been circulating about who voted for Proposition 8? Will the people who turned out to vote for Obama be there to vote for other electoral change? Come and find out.
Next, Pamela Coukos, SF-Berkeley's Regional Field Director for the Obama campaign, will talk about the lessons learned from the campaign's massive national volunteer mobilization.
Finally, the passage of Proposition 8 dealt a serious setback to marriage equality and even the concept of minority protection. What steps can the marriage equality movement take to combat the effects of this proposition and move forward? Our panel of advocates may provide some answers. Our confirmed panellists are Julie Davis (No On 8), Alicia Walters (ACLU-NC), Paul Hogarth (Editor, "Beyond Chron," and poster for "The Huffington Post") and Cat Kim and Eric Schiller (both of Join The Impact SF, the viral organization behind what bloggers are calling Stonewall 2.0).
