May: We've all wondered: Why won't our supposedly progressive elected officials act on their values? Why won't they stand up for gay marriage, universal healthcare, economic justice, raising taxes, impeaching Bush and Cheney, and defunding the War in Iraq? And what can we do to hold them accountable?

We'll discuss practical things you can do to stiffen our elected officials' spines with a panel of experienced and effective activists, including:

* Rae Abileah and Janet Weil, National Grassroots Coordinators, CODEPINK Women for Peace

* Will Easton, Activism Manager, CREDO Action

* Barry Hermanson, local activist for economic and social justice

Also: A report from our own Greg Keaton on the 2008 Annual General Meeting of Amnesty International.

It was interesting to see the emphasis on practical work: Code Pink's focused theatricality and Will Easton's emphasis on the importance of money and of sending messages to politicians to let them know that we want them to change their positions, and to use their power to enact progressive values. Barry Hermanson's somewhat repetitive presentation stressed the central importance of budgeting and put the failure of Congress to even consider reducing the military budget in the context of twisted priorities. Too bad the attendance was so small. One criticism I have of the meetup format is that it doesn't allow enough time for organizing. Susan P. should have had a minute or two more to get commitments from people to work for Mark Leno.
    •  The speakers were very good and knowledgeable.
